The Mario Party games supported full multiplayer with just a single copy of the game on both the DS/3DS (with individual activities/tracks downloaded on-the-fly). Many of my fondest memories of the DS/3DS were thanks to Download Play, and they were only as feature packed as the developers/publishers would allow, and I don’t buy this rubbish that technical limitations were a hindrance. It’s crazy to me that classic Quake has local wireless support, but the classic DOOMs don’t (the latter doesn’t have online multiplayer support either). Virtually any game with online multiplayer should also support local wireless by default (though this gripe doesn’t relate to Download Play per se). Hell, local wireless multiplayer generally is criminally underused across the board. Sure, the option of tabletop play is there, but who wants to play huddled around a tiny screen if everybody has their own console? Much of the dissent here is made under the assumption that everybody has access to a TV at all times, and sure, in such situations, wireless multiplayer would arguably be unnecessary, but this is the Switch’s capability as a handheld device that is being discussed here, and TV/tabletop mode alienates Switch Lite users and/or those who overwhelmingly use their Switches as a handheld device. Really disappointed by all of the Debbie Downers here pooh-poohing Download Play, which is one of several 3DS features noticeably missing from the Switch, and the one I miss most, second only to stereoscopic 3D.
We know Switch games are much bigger than DS games (Mario Kart DS is under 20 MB, compared to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is currently around 7.4 GB, and that's without the DLC). So, the lovely Felix is making a case on why the Switch should have a similar feature so we can play games with our friends to our heart's content. which is the only multiplayer game in that collection), and the latter has a Local Multiplayer Guest Edition which you can download from the eShop.
The former has a multiplayer-only version that's free (but it only has Pac-Man Vs. But the Switch doesn't have this - only Namco Museum and Clubhouse Games: 51 Worldwide Games do something similar. Being able to play games with someone even if they don't have their own copy is amazing. Who used Download Play on their DS or 3DS? We played so much Mario Kart DS with our friends using this feature that we really miss it. And we've come up with another improvement that we think would make multiplayer even easier. But that doesn't mean we don't have issues with the console or think it could do with an update or two every so often. It's a pretty neat piece of kit after all.
